Hey there,
I've got a big update and a mantra to share with you this week.
I'll also start sending a bi-weekly newsletter moving forward.
Let’s talk about Kanye West.
First off, this isn't about religion nor is it a reference to Jesus Walks.
I watched the Netflix documentary on Kanye, jeen-yuhs, and something stood out to me: Kanye had the utmost faith in himself.
Antics from recent years aside, it's clear Kanye's success wasn't handed to him on a silver platter. Despite the challenges he faced in becoming a rapper, he had full confidence that he was going to make it happen. He knew he would succeed.
Then I realized where he got that faith from: His mom had unwavering faith in him.
That was the opposite of how I was raised.
I was raised with a scarcity mindset.
Avoid risk. Be careful. Don't rock the boat. You might lose it all.
When I got older, I learned about having an abundance mindset and realized my performance and many of my decisions were based on fear and anxiety, cornerstones of a scarcity mindset.
That sounded like:
Sure, that meant I did a damn great job at work. It made sure I only shared my best ideas after spending hours refining them before saying them out loud. And I ended up doing well in sports.
But it was all driven by stress and anxiety.
I’ve been shifting my mindset and flipping the script so my invisible self-talk sounds more like:
Maybe part of the realization came with getting older and figuring out my self worth. Therapy has helped a lot too.
I’ve shifted away from acting out of fear to having faith in myself and the process. It hasn't been an easy process but it has made a whole world of difference for decreasing stress and turning work into something that gives me energy.
That’s my daily mantra: faith over fear.
I recently put it in practice: 3 weeks ago, I announced that I quit my day job and am now all-in on building Omniscient Digital.
Would love to hear how you're choosing faith over fear in your life and work.
I recently joined Entrepreneur's Organization Accelerator, a peer group of entrepreneurs to have additional accountability and meet successful business owners who I can learn from.
Omniscient Digital has broken 7-figures in booked revenue. This was our goal for the year and we hit it less than halfway through the year. We're growing faster than we've expected and that means things might break. So it'll be necessary to learn from others who have seen the game before.
We haven't missed a beat though. We've increased our revenue goal and continue to push forward.
Part of our continued growth means hiring. Know anyone who would be great for the roles below? All of them are remote-friendly.
Please send me intros to people who you'd recommend and/or share the job listing with them.
Now that I'm no longer working two jobs, I'm starting to share what I'm working on and learnings.
First I shared how I validated a side business and mitigated risk before jumping in full-time and why I left a high paying tech job to build a marketing agency.
I also invested in real estate a year ago before these insane interest rates so I shared why my first real estate purchase was in investment property.
Ashutosh Priyadarshy, Founder of Sunsama, also joined me for an episode of The Long Game. We talked about rethinking productivity and work. Ashutosh and I share some core values about work including the following:
📚 Reading: Finished The Dark Forest. Now reading Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits!
🎧 Listening: Will (audiobook) by Will Smith
👀 Watching: jeen-yuhs
Cheers,
David

Hey there, Hope your year is off to a great start. I'm visiting my hometown, Long Beach, California, and reflecting on the first two weeks of the year and what's to come for the business this year. At least 30% of the storefronts I drive by are closed. Small family-owned Cambodian grocery stores I grew up shopping at, coffee shops I used to work from, places of which I have fond memories. It’s all a reminder of how challenging business can be--often due to factors out of our control. In this...
Hey there, A new year is coming up and for many of us, myself included, that means setting goals for next year. A big question about goals came up amongst friends this year. Are we setting goals just for the sake of having goals? I have a monthly accountability call with friends and last month one of us admitted something along these lines: "I know we have these calls and we commit to these monthly goals, but it feels like I'm just going through the motions. These goals don't even excite me....
Hey there, The R word has been thrown around a lot the last few months and it seems it’ll be a bigger talking point in 2023. So let’s talk about marketing strategy during a recession. 1. On my mind: Marketing strategy for B2B SaaS companies during a recession We’re seeing all the layoffs in the tech world and unfortunately, some of you reading this might have been impacted. If you have been impacted and looking for a role, don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know how I can help. Many...
