monthly meditations: being more intentional with time

Hey there, this email is turning more into a quarterly meditation than monthly but here we go.

1. On my mind

I've been asking myself what a perfect day looks like and how I can be more intentional with how I spend my time.

My most recent journal entries make it obvious how much of my life revolves around work. Even my hobby of learning about and building a business is what most people would call work.

I have a day job at People.ai and I'm building a business, that already takes up the majority of a day.

When I think about my day-to-day holistically. How the hell am I (really, anyone, maybe even you) supposed to fit in the normal life things? Eating, cooking, exercising, sleeping. That's before adding in any social activities with friends and family.

I'm in a very privileged position to even have the time to think about these things, but it makes me wonder how much of our time is spent the way we want to spend it?

If you had the freedom to spend an entire day (or even week) as you pleased, how would you spend it?

For me, that means building my business, taking my dog on multiple walks a day, going on hikes, working out, and reading more sci-fi 😅

What does that ideal day look like for you?

2. Business update

Omniscient Digital is on track to break 7-figures this year with the founding team working on it part-time. This turned out to be easier than expected so we increased our revenue goal for the year.

We got some big brands we admire as clients and we're setting ourselves up to scale. We recently hired a managing editor to help us streamline our editorial processes and hired on a head of outreach to develop our linkbuilding program.

3. Created

I did three interviews I'm proud of for The Long Game podcast:

  • Ross Simmonds, CEO of Foundation, shared lessons from his grandmother, Nana, that he applies to life and business.
  • Rand Fishkin, CEO of Sparktoro, shared learnings from building Moz and why he decided to not take VC funding for his current company.
  • Alfie Marsh, Head of US Go-to-Market at Spendesk, shared how he thinks about international expansion from France to the US and how he approaches mental health.

I also published a review about Sunsama. It's my favorite software product that I use to plan my work day every single day. You can get a trial of Sunsama here (I get paid if you sign up). I also recently spoke with Ashutosh Priyadarshy, Sunsama's founder, for an upcoming podcast episode.

4. Consumed

💻 Interesting articles: Tequila and mezcal have grown significantly in popularity. The rapid pace in the consumer space is fascinating. Also here are some lessons from owning a bookstore from Ryan Holiday. I'd like to own a brick and mortar type business eventually.

📚 Book I'm reading: I've started The Dark Forest. Everyone who has read it say it's much better than The Three Body Problem. I also finished Amp It Up.

🎧 What I'm listening to: The My First Million podcast has been a regular in my rotation. The episodes with Andrew Wilkinson are particularly insightful, especially the one on getting rich slowly.

👀 What I'm watching: The second season of Bridgerton was heartfelt and entertaining. I'll likely cut out this part in future emails because my partner and I are reducing our idle time on the couch.

🤑 What I've bought: I splurged on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. I'm an Android guy (Pixel 5!) and tried the iPad Pro for a few years but never enjoyed the experience. I'm still a fan of Macbooks though.

Hey there, Hope your year is off to a great start. I'm visiting my hometown, Long Beach, California, and reflecting on the first two weeks of the year and what's to come for the business this year. At least 30% of the storefronts I drive by are closed. Small family-owned Cambodian grocery stores I grew up shopping at, coffee shops I used to work from, places of which I have fond memories. It’s all a reminder of how challenging business can be--often due to factors out of our control. In this...

Hey there, A new year is coming up and for many of us, myself included, that means setting goals for next year. A big question about goals came up amongst friends this year. Are we setting goals just for the sake of having goals? I have a monthly accountability call with friends and last month one of us admitted something along these lines: "I know we have these calls and we commit to these monthly goals, but it feels like I'm just going through the motions. These goals don't even excite me....

Hey there, The R word has been thrown around a lot the last few months and it seems it’ll be a bigger talking point in 2023. So let’s talk about marketing strategy during a recession. 1. On my mind: Marketing strategy for B2B SaaS companies during a recession We’re seeing all the layoffs in the tech world and unfortunately, some of you reading this might have been impacted. If you have been impacted and looking for a role, don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know how I can help. Many...
